I visited NYC from India, and signed up for the BREED workshop with Melissa in Sept 2015. On the first day, I walked into a studio filled with photographers (full-time, part-time, aspiring) from 6-7 countries. Melissa and Tyler put us at ease and we spent the first day shooting six different looks under different lighting setups with two models. Each participant could direct the models to get theirshot, while the styling and lighting was predetermined by the instructors. The participants helped each other by assisting too! I followed Melissa's work for a few years, and I just fired away questions on everything I wanted to know and she explained everything very patiently. On the second day, Tyler explained the process of retouching the images. The techniques that he taught allowed me to retouch my images with better results than I achieved before. In the afternoon, Melissa reviewed each participant's portfolio and offered them critical advice on the next step they should take to become a successful fashion photographer. At the end of the second day, all the instructors and participants had a social get-together. I came back from the workshop with a new set of friends, lots of practical information on techniques and a head full of ideas! I would highly recommend the workshop with Melissa and Tyler and am already planning to attend another one!
The seminar was everything I needed at this point in my career. Being in a real environment on set with Melissa was extremely eye-opening and rewarding. She is very laid-back, and extremely savvy in her fashion expertise. I loved meeting her and her team, and being able to ask questions and absorb a wealth of knowledge. I took away a priceless amount of information that I have already applied to my new work. I am excited to know that I am on the right path with my career, and apply the confidence Melissa gave me in the future. I loved every minute of her seminar and would recommend it to anyone on a career path of becoming a fashion photographer.
If you are serious about becoming a fashion photographer, this is the workshop to take. Melissa and David are very serious about teaching you the skills needed to help you succeed and they are coming from a place of personal success and experience in this industry. From the different lighting setups, tips on working with models more effectively, to learning about how the fashion business runs and finally, the non-destructive post-processing lessons, you come away with a new understanding of techniques on how to improve your own work. Just looking at Melissa's tear sheets and book [which you actually get the opportunity to do] speaks volumes to her's and David's skills and talent for teaching these subjects. I wish I had taken this workshop a long time ago as it would have saved me a lot of time and money in making unnecessary mistakes that I wouldn't have made had I taken this workshop first. There is also a sense of camaraderie with the other students as we are all there for the same reason. The lessons are really important to learn to succeed but is presented in a way that is not intense nor feels intimidating. It is open and easy going to allow students to relax, ask questions and make comments. In fact, questions are welcomed and that is one thing you want to do; ask as much as you can while you have the chance to talk to people who know what they are talking about and can help you tremendously with their knowledge. I would recommend Melissa's workshop over any other being offered in this field. No other workshop I have taken offers this level of personal success, expertise and knowledge from it's instructors and is so well thought out as to what is necessary to teach those who truly want to learn how to increase their chances for success in fashion photography
I took Melissa's workshop in 2012 in Berlin and until today I still think that was the best investment I ever did for my photography. When you meet Melissa you know instantly that this workshop is serious business, she packed this workshopfull of hands-on fashion photography and business insider tips. From fashionlighting to model directing, from mood boards to technical aspects, everything you could wish for is in this workshop. Melissa never holds back her opinion and honest feedback and that makes it so valuable. I was photographing models before this workshop and tried to get my foot into model agencies with little success. After Melissa's workshop I knew how to approach agencies much better, my photography improved a lot and when I shot with teams of stylists and assistants I felt way more confident. I was able to not only get models from the big agencies but also get paid for it, I got published in several magazines and most important for the first time I really felt I was on my way to becoming afashion photographer. So, if you think about taking a fashion photography workshop - this is the one. Period.
Melissa Rodwell has been a favorite of mine for a long time. When I had the opportunity to attend a Breed workshop of hers in LA, I pounced on it. The workshop did not disappoint. I learned so much by having the opportunity to watch her in action. Seeing how she lights, how she interacts with the stylist and hair/makeup artist, and communicating with the model to bring her vision to life was nothing short of amazing. Melissa is incredibly personable and very honest when it comes to talking about your current body of work and where it needs to go from here. Getting that kind of critique and heartfelt guidance from someone who knows the industry like she does is priceless. Plus, it is evident that she truly loves the world of fashion and wants to keep it pure with a high level of quality and integrity - where it belongs. I am very thankful for the chance I was given to attend the workshop and the influence it has brought to my work since. I highly recommend attending a workshop from Melissa if you have the chance!
Melissa's workshop was without a doubt the most invaluable learning experience I have had in my career so far. Melissa's knowledge and instruction on fashion lighting was second to none and Tyler's retouching class was clear, precise and taught me how to retouch to a high quality industry standard. I would recommend a workshop with Melissa and Tyler to anyone that wants to step up their game in fashion photography! I walked out of that workshop a new and improved photographer!
I had the pleasure of taking a Fashion Photography Class with Melissa Rodwell and I can't say enough about what I learned during the 2 day session. This is an advanced class, not basic lighting, etc. Melissa walks you through a number of lighting setups and most importantly explains when and why you would want to light your fashion shots using these setups. She is wonderful in taking questions and making sure your dumbest questions are answered intelligently with her own experiences in the fashion world. The second day is mostly about editing and touching up your photos to give them a fashion look. Again, this is an advanced class and when I attended this session was taught by Tyler who has assisted on many shoots with Melissa and he shares his expertise with Photoshop and some other tools. Tyler welcomes questions and give great feedback. I also had him help me go in the right direction on some shots from one of my own fashion shoots and his advice was spot on. In many ways, the most important things I learned from these 2 fantastic teachers was a sense of confidence that I brought to my own sessions and all the information Melissa and Tyler shared really sticks with you and helps out incredibly during my own shoots. I often times find myself thinking of a look and then going through the lighting setups and post processing techniques in my mind in order to get the final product that I or my customers want to see!
